Customer Reviews:

Seem to be O.K.4
I ordered four of these items, and so far, they have done well. No failures, yet. Although I had a CF card of this brand that failed (my only card that did, ever), luckily before I had used it on a trip. San Disk gave me a bigger capacity card, promptly, by a phone call to their tech support, and I was satisfied. I do bring along back-up, so I didn’t miss any shots due to less memory.

It may be better to have several smaller cards, as you don’t have all your eggs in one basket. Terrible to have just one 4 GB card, and then it fails. I tried then to have different cards from different manufacturers, but because of the good deal, here, decided to buy all my cards the same way. Just can’t find a better price! Now, memory cards are available everywhere, so I can just go to a store and buy another one, should one or two fail on a road trip.

My new 7 MP Nikon Coolpix manual, then, says a higher speed card may be required to prevent quits during TV mode recording, but I shot once for 40 seconds, and that came out fine. They’ll be good up to about 11 minutes on one 1 GB card, but I haven’t needed to shoot that long. I’m probably going to get a high speed card when I can get another good deal. The lowering price is now a better, great bargain, and if I should need more SD cards, I know where to get them!

Thank you, Amazon!

Beware, Fake SD card1
I bought this product and found that it didn’t work in the camera I bought it for. Suspicious, I contacted SanDisk and found that the card was not genuine. The SanDisk logo on the back of this card is not on any regular SanDisk cards. Even if this card works in your camera, I would not keep it. Fake SD cards are known to have less reliability and slower read times. They are also not supported by SanDisk. This item has been switching sellers recently. I wonder why. I know this review looks awkward among other good reviews, but please believe me. Do not buy!

BUYERS BEWARE1
I PURCHASED THE SANDISK 1GB FROM EEK TECHNOLOGY FOR MY CANON POWERSHOT A510. THE PACKAGE ARRIVED PROMPTLY AFTER BEING CHARGED $12.00 FOR SHIPPING AND HANDLING WHEN THE ACTUAL COST OF POSTAGE WAS ONLY .67 CENTS. MY COMPLAINT BROUGHT A REFUND OF ONLY 4.00, LEAVING THE COMPANY A WHOPPING $8.00 TO STICK THE ITEM IN A BUBBLE ENVELOPE AND SHIP IT…..A VERY NICE PROFIT.
NOW THE REALLY BAD NEWS……THE CARD SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK. I FORMATTED IT, TRIED IT IN FRIENDS CAMERAS AND DID EVERY THING IMAGINABLE BUT TO NO AVAIL. WHEN I CONTACTED EEK THEY REPLIED THAT THE 30 DAY RETURN PERIOD HAD EXPIRED ( ONLY BY HOURS DEPENDING ON WHEN THE PERIOD BEGINS ) AND THAT I NOW HAD TO DEAL DIRECTLY WITH SANDISK.
THIS IS NO WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS AND I WOULD CAUTION OTHERS WHO SENSE A “GOOD BUY” TO REMEMBER THE OLD SAYING ” YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR”.

I really liked “Quarantine” despite the number of people who bash it. Yes, it’s an example of a serious and debilitating problem in the US horror movie genre right now in that it’s a remake of another movie. I’m sure most horror fans like myself are tired of seeing unnecessary remakes of classic horror movies we’ve already seen and are ready to see some original stories being written. However, when the film in question is a remake of a foreign-language film and it sticks to the original concept and story, then I don’t have so much of a problem. And so it is with “Quarantine”.

Yes, it’s a remake of the Spanish movie [*REC]. Since the two films are almost identical, I prefer this one since I don’t have to take my eyes off the action to read subtitles. “Quarantine” is a claustrophobic, tense, and chilling little film and I enjoyed it very, very much. Jennifer Carpenter put in a great performance, as did the rest of the cast, and if you enjoy good horror movies you will enjoy this one. Is it a milestone in the horror film genre? No. But then again, milestones are few and far between, hence the term. I *can* tell you that “Quarantine” is the most memorable horror film I’ve seen since it premiered in US theaters and pretty much kept me on the edge of my seat once things kicked into gear.

My only qualm with the DVD release is the price. $19.95 for a single edition DVD with so few extras? Come on… Not cool, guys.

Quarantine is a much better movie than its previews would lead you to believe. Previews make it look like people are trapped in an old building with zombies running amok in it. Maybe they came up from the sewers.

In fact it follows a reality TV reporter who is following an LA fire crew on calls. They go to a building when neighbors have reported screams coming from the apartment of an old lady. What follows is the outbreak of a savage, mind destroying disease where tenants and first responders find them sealed in with those already infected, by the CDC.

Like Cloverfield and Blair Witch, the film is shot from the single camera view of the reality reporter’s camera man. Unlike those films the camera work is clean and does not distract the viewer. Watch the long shot when a call comes as the camera man has to follow the reporter down a hall, a flight of stairs and into a truck and realize it was all done in one take without cuts. The first 20 minutes of the film are the `reality show’ walking around the fire house, talking to members of the fire crew and setting the stage by letting you meet the key players in the film. This is clearly the set up but it doesn’t feel stilted. You don’t feel like saying `get on with it” because you care about the characters. Carpenter, as the on air talent is likeable and believable, going from bubbly on air talent, to real reporter as things turn serious to scared human as she realizes just how deep in they are. And she takes the viewer with her.

Previews make this look like just another zombie film. There are certainly elements of that in Quarantine but for the genre it is so much better than much of the competition. They even have an explanation, scary in how reasonable it is, for what is happening. Is it “Sound of Music?” of course not. It is a horror film, but one in which the director has taken a lot of care to make the whole thing frighteningly possible.

Bought as ‘08 Christmas Gift1
Bought this as a gift for 11 yr old Christmas 2008. I recently had surgery and when I used, I could not believe how distorted the voices were. We changed to every possible option, with earphones, on speakers and still terrible,— I “wish” I had listened to this last year. Parents Be sure to check the sound with a DVD you are familiar with.

Good – and DOES have a menu button!5
This is a fine player. You can access the menu by pressing the TITLE button twice. Fast-foward and rewind by pressing the previous and next buttons and holding them down. The screen is not HD quality but I don’t need it to be for my exercise dvds. I purchased this used and it works great.

Good buy for extra DVD3
The only complaint I have about this DVD is that there is no menu button. We bought this for my daughter for the airplane. She can pretty much use it herself but without a menu option – we are stuck watching previews and forwarding to the main feature. Good battery power.

I have been a performer off and on for most of my life. My best friend is in a couple bands. Needless to say, we both loved this movie. We caught it at the local Art House movie theatre (shout out to the great folks at Portland’s Historic Hollywood Theatre!).

What’s it about? A Japanese high school girl group has a falling out with their lead singer about an incident that injures one of the other girls. There are hurt feelings all around. So the remaining girls decide to swap instruments and draft the local misfit (the stunningly talented super-model-turned actress Du-na Bae) Korean girl to sing lead.

Nothing turns out quite like you’d expect. There are wonderous small moments all tied together with the tour-de-force-of-nature that is Bae. The smaller characters are well defined, and you get a real sense of this world.

Captures the feeling of giddiness/stress that is performance better than virutally any movie I’ve seen in years. Do you love punk music? Do you love movies about misfits? Do you love films about finding your own place? THEN RUN and get this film. A real stunner.

Japanese indie film “Linda Linda Linda” follows the story of four high school girls who need to learn to play the songs of the Blue Hearts, 80s Japanese punk rock band, for the annual school festival. They got only three days to practice, and the vocal happens to be an international student from Korea. But can they master the songs and play them in front of the audiences?

The story is simple. As two girls recently left the group, three remaining members of the band Kyoko (Aki Maeda, “Battle Royale”), Kei (Yu Kashii) and Nozomi (Shiori Sekine) have to find a vocalist for the new band. They recruit a timid Korean exchange student Son (Du-na Bae, “The Host”), who, as it turns out, shows unexpected side of her character as she keeps practicing.

[SLOW-MOVING BUT TOUCHING] First, keep this in mind before watching “Linda Linda Linda” of which mood is something different from such films as, say, “School of Rock” or “Hard Day’s Night” (both my favorite films). The catchy Blue Hearts songs are wonderful and the rock concert scenes are full of energy, but the greatness of director Nobuhiro Yamashita is that he not only succeeded in expressing the youthful energy of high school girls, but also cleverly suggesting that the girls are leaving behind their younger days though they themselves are not aware of it.

To fully enjoy “Linda Linda Linda,” please remember these things. Annual high school festivals (usually called “bunka-sai” in Japanese) are usually held in autumn and the girls are in the third (and last) year of high school. That means this is their final chance to join in the bunka-sai of their school. Son will go back to her country and most probably they will not play together again. Yamashita inserts several episodes or images that imply the festival (or the sweet, joyful days of youth) is going to be over soon – the images of deserted schoolyard or one of the girl’s ex-boyfriend leaving the town, for instance. Only grown-ups around the girls know this fact (listen carefully the words from the teacher), but the girls themselves do not seem to realize this, or even if they do, they don’t understand the meaning of it … until long after their youth is past.

The film deftly captures the atmosphere of high school festivals in Japan. I can assure you the authenticity of each scene of the film because I was once a high school student there. So much time and efforts are put into “bunka-sai”: classrooms are turned into shops selling noodles, ice cream stand, rock music club or “haunted house.” It is precious moment of life, which becomes part of bitter-sweet memories of youth only after you realize you have left it behind forever.

The acting is uniformly great, especially the brilliant performance from Du-na Bae as Son, who is to be seen in “The Host,” a 2006 mega-hit in South Korea. In fact she might be a bit too old to play the role Son (Du-na Bae was about 25 years-old at the time of shooting), but her spontaneous and lively performance makes us forget that. The film is also benefited from the authentic location as it was shot in the real, now disused building of Maebashi Industrial High School in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, which had recently moved to another location.

“Linda Linda Linda” uses a slightly downbeat approach in telling the story, avoiding the cliched plot devices. It is sometimes slow-moving, but in moving slowly, it shows a realistic portrait of high school life in Japan. Wherever you are, you will see it is an amusing and touching film that captures the essence of youth.

Perfect Netbook5
Ordered this netbook because I was looking for an n450 powered device akin to the 1005 line.

Well let me say that I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra 60 bucks. This computer has everything the 1005 line has minus bluetooth (honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who uses bluetooth) battery life (11 vs 14 hours, real world 8 vs 11 hours), harddrive space (160GB versus 250GB which is a negligible difference), display (matte screen vs glossy screen equal resolution), wireless (g vs n) and finish (matte vs glossy).

Now, that seems like a lot of differences, but all of them, save battery life, are pointless bells and whistles that do nothing to affect the performance of the computer (akin to putting a moon roof and a spoiler on a car and jacking the price up).

Battery life is the only worthwhile difference between the two models (maybe worth 60-80 bucks depending on what your plans are). It would have been nice to have wireless n, but most users probably won’t notice a difference.

As far as the screen and finish go, I think matte is actually an advantage. A glossy screen is exhausting to read on in bright light. I’ll never understand what the recent obsession with glossy screens is; they are murderous to the eyes. As for a glossy finish, your netbook will look like a piece of well worn packing tape after 15 minutes (big greasy fingerprints everywhere!).

I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the keyboard of this model feels spongy, but I think they must be typing with mallets, because the 1001p keyboard feels like every other laptop I’ve ever used. It does not depress in the corners or anywhere for that matter and I’m a fairly hard typist.

The first thing I did when I got this computer was clean install windows 7 ultimate and office 2003 (office 2007 being an unholy abomination; a grievous injustice perpetrated upon all of mankind). So far the netbook has been breezing through applications on 1GB ram with nary a stutter. I would highly recommend upgrading from the absolute garbage windows 7 starter, it doesn’t even let you change the wallpaper and is solely intended to annoy you. Furthermore, you might as well get rid of all the asus software (it periodically generates pop-up ads asking if you want to pay for something) and just install the drivers for lan and wireless, you really don’t need the others.

In conclusion (ah, high school english where would I be without you) The 1001P is a solid, surprisingly powerful little netbook with excellent design. It is more than adequate for most computing tasks short of video editing. And for 280$? Are you kidding me? How can you complain?

Initial reactions4
I’m very pleased with this netbook! I’ll break my review into different aspects of the device, to try to keep things relatively organized.

AMAZON PACKAGING
No issues here, perfect. I ordered mine overnight, so it came via FedEx. The box was easy to open, and there was sufficient packing material inside.

APPEARANCE
Very attractive case on this. The faux carbon fiber (it’s not REAL carbon fiber, wish it were) pattern is very slick looking. I will say that I’ve only had this one day, and there are a couple of scratches on the surface–nothing serious, and they’re only visible at certain angles, but it sort of sucks, and I’d recommend getting a case for this thing, such as the Case Logic PLS-9 Ultraportable Netbook Sleeve for 7-Inch to 10-Inch Netbooks (Black). Again, too bad it’s not real carbon fiber casing. :) Otherwise it would be virtually indestructible! The display is a matte backlit LED, with a native resolution of 1024×600. It’s crisp and bright, and mine had no dead pixels or any other issues. Very nice screen!

ERGONOMICS
As expected, this thing is small! Not overly small like the older 8″ netbooks, but small enough to stash away into a briefcase or attaché case for sure. It also doesn’t weigh much, which makes it highly portable. The keyboard is a 92% full size keyboard, and I’d say it’s perfect. I can type at nearly full speed without feeling cramped at all. The keyboard “gives” a bit under typing pressure (mostly in the upper left portion), which makes it feel a little cheap, but it’s nothing to be concerned about. All the keys themselves are pretty solid. The one thing I DO not like about this netbook is opening it. It’s very awkward to open the lid, because there’s just a very small lip to put your finger under and lift it up. There are no other decent spots to get a good grip to open the lid, unfortunately, and that’s one of the main reasons I only give this netbook four stars. The other thing that’s mildly annoying is it’s very back-heavy, due to the 6-cell battery, so the laptop tends to tilt backwards. Minor, but again, something that makes this a 4-star product rather than a perfect 5-star.

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE
This comes with Windows 7 Starter installed. Ignore any comments or product details that state it comes with WinXP – it doesn’t. Win7 Starter runs pretty well, just what you’d expect with a netbook: not super fast, but it’s not like you’re tapping your foot waiting for things to load, either. To be honest, I didn’t spend a lot of time in Windows before I reformatted and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. More on that below. The battery life in Win7 claims 9-11 hours, which is quite impressive. The wi-fi card works without a hitch, and all power-saving capabilities work quite well.

Now, onto some Ubuntu stuff…

This device isn’t quite Ubuntu-ready. Or maybe I should say, Ubuntu isn’t compliant with 1001P hardware just yet. With a fresh install of Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, several things do not work: wi-fi, multi-touch, built-in microphone, and brightness controls. The brightness controls do work, but they are unpredictable. With some searching around, though, you can find helpful resources to guide you in the right direction to getting these things working. If anyone has specific questions on Ubuntu, post a comment and I’ll do my best to reply.

One important note: if you decide to format this and put some other operating system on it, do NOT wipe out the 10GB and 17MB partitions! The 10GB partition contains the Windows 7 clone source which you can boot on and use to revert the netbook back to using Windows 7 as its operating system. So no matter how bad things get, you can always boot up that partition and reinstall Windows. If you’ve installed Ubuntu, there might be some extra leg-work to get that recovery partition to properly do its job (you may have to re-create those two extra partitions and make them FAT32 or something). I’m still fuzzy on going back to Windows after having Ubuntu installed.

I may give an update later after using it more. Feel free to post comments on this review.

Terrific little netbook5
This small light netbook exceeds my expectations. I did not imagine it would have such a user friendly keyboard; I use it for word processing of short items such as this review. This product is so easy to lift, manipulate and carry. Battery life seems to be as advertised. I thought pink would be distracting; it isn’t. This has quickly become my favorite computer. It’s my first ASUS, and it has sold me on the company. As always, kudos to Amazon for sensible packaging and speed of delivery.

In 1939, Bette Davis provided one of her greatest performances as Queen Elizabeth the 1st in the Technicolor MGM drama “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex”. She sacrificed for the role, to the extent of shaving her eyebrows plus two inches from her hairline to resemble the aged monarch. So when Twentieth Century Fox went forward with THE VIRGIN QUEEN sixteen years later, it made sense for Bette Davis to once again ascend the throne. Though it does pale dramatically when compared to the earlier film, Bette Davis’ regal performance keeps it on a smooth path.

Queen Elizabeth (Bette Davis) falls in love with the younger Sir Walter Raleigh (Richard Todd), despite the scheming of a catty rival (Joan Collins). Though historically, THE VIRGIN QUEEN often plays fast and loose with the truth; Joan Collins (a Fox contract player of the period) creates some fireworks as the “Other Woman”–and her scenes with Davis are fun. Richard Todd and Bette Davis also have an enjoyable rapport, despite Henry Koster’s often pedestrian direction.

If you enjoyed “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex”, you will most certainly appreciate THE VIRGIN QUEEN. How often does an actor get the chance to revisit a role and get to use their newfound maturity and insight to create a deeper characterisation the second time around?

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Virgin Queen! Click Here

Highly-recommended for Bette Davis fans.

This is Davis’ second film in which she plays Queen Elizabeth I of England. Personally, I thought 1939’s “Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” was better, but it is hard to compare the two since this film takes place 15 years earlier in history than “Private Lives” and has Davis essentially playing Elizabeth at the age – 47 – that Davis actually is. The earlier film had Davis at 31 playing Queen Elizabeth in her sixties. Here Richard Todd plays Sir Walter Raleigh, who, like Essex in the earlier film, is a younger man who trades on Elizabeth’s love for him to gain some personal glory. Richard Todd plays Raleigh effectively, but there is just no topping the charisma of Flynn’s performance in the earlier movie.

The special features include a “Making Of” featurette, some trailers, and a photo gallery. This film is being released separately and as part of Fox’ Bette Davis Centenary Collection.

Kurosawa and Shakespeare are a winning combination. With “Throne of Blood,” Kurosawa strips Macbeth to the bare bones of plot, then packs on new flesh in the form of scheming ambition in feudal Japan.

In this version, Washizu (Macbeth) is somewhat simple, and content with what comes his way, be it castle or fort, honor or deceit. His wife, the infamous Lady Macbeth, is chillingly calm and dangerous. She has no interest in her husband’s contentment, and knows that the only way to advance her position is to advance the position of her husband, by whatever means necessary. Her role as the spider is particularly suited to the halls of the Cobweb Castle.

The acting and filming are up to the quality that one expects from Kurosawa and Mifune. The pacing of the film is full of dynamic contrasts, going from heart-pounding action to patient silence. This film is not spoon-fed to you, but demands your concentration. The visuals are particularly stunning in “Throne of Blood.” The cobweb forest is haunting, and the single weird sister, all in white spinning in a white cage, maintains the same chilling calmness of Washizu’s wife.

One of the many nice touches of “Throne of Blood” is the chance to see that Samurai at the height of their power. These are not the poor, struggling warriors of “Seven Samurai” or “Yojimbo.” Washizu is decked out in full armor for the bulk of the film, and his castle is defended and attacked by well-dressed armies. Each lord is powerful and wields mighty forces.

Oh, and of course, the big finish. All I can say is wow.

A great deal has been made of the fact that THRONE OF BLOOD (also known as SPIDER’S WEB CASTLE) is drawn from one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays. This is both a blessing and a curse, for while it gives western audiences a point of reference, it also invites all sorts of comparisons that viewers familiar with the Shakespeare play feel honor-bound to make–and that can get in the way of seeing the film as it is rather than what we expect it to be. And that would be a great pity, because what it is in and of itself is quite fine indeed.

The cast is a very strong ensemble, with frequent Kurosawa star Torshiro Mifune leading the film with a remarkably fine performance as the ambitious warrior Taketori Washizu. To my mind, however, the most memorable performance is offered by Isuzu Yamada as Lady Washizu–who plays the role with a demonic stillness that cracks into physical action only when she is completely sure of herself or in utter desperation. It is one of the most disturbing characterizations I have ever encountered.

As usual in any Kurosawa film, the imagery involved is extremely powerful, and the moody tone of the film quickly draws viewers in–and once ensnared there is no escape; the film holds your attention with considerable ease throughout. Even so, I would not recommend THRONE OF BLOOD to western audiences who have never seen a Kurosawa film, for it is so completely Japanese in aesthetic that some may find it hard to grasp. It is best seen after you are already familiar with both Kurosawa’s work and Japanese cinema in general.

The Criterion DVD is quite good, with a nicely restored transfer and bonus features that include the original trailer, a choice of subtitle translations (I prefer the Hoagland translation), and a somewhat awkward but ultimately rewarding commentary track by Michael Jeck. If you’re a Kurosawa fan and you’ve never seen THRONE OF BLOOD, this is your opportunity; if you’re looking to replace an existing video with a DVD, this one is likely as good as it gets. Strongly recommended.

Commenting strictly on the Bonus DVD, “Wake Up Ron Burgundy”, I must say that my expectations were far surpassed. I was expecting a bonus disc of deleted and extended scenes, cast notes, etc… I had no idea they had filmed enough footage to cut another movie together. I loved the original Anchorman movie, so I was pretty excited to see this “bonus movie”.

“Wake Up Ron Burgundy” contains some scenes that could easily have been used in the original movie. There is some hilarious material to be discovered on this disc. The DVD also contains Rehearsal footage, Ron Burgundy’s award acceptance speeches, MTV Movie Award interviews and even some skits they seemed to film for no other reason than their own amusement. This is great material to have if you like the “Channel 4 News Team”, as they are truly permitted to run wild in these bonus features. I have not been able to find this DVD offered on its own and I’m assuming it is of limited quantity, so get it while you can…

As far as I know, the only way to get it is to purchase it in the bundle with the original. I actually had to buy the movie again when I found out there was another DVD to be seen. The original had left me with countless lines to quote and so many scenes I found myself rewinding over and over again that I decided to splurge and get the bonus disc along with another original copy.

If you enjoyed Ron, Champ, Brian & Brick in Anchorman, you will definitely enjoy this movie.

“If we encounter any hostiles, silent throat cuts only” – Brick Tambland.

I LOVED this movie when I saw it in the theatre over the past summer- so I was pumped to see an “unrated” version come out on DVD.

Whomever was in charge of putting this DVD together yanked a huge chain on this release. I had expected the “unrated” version to be funnier than the theatrical version which I thought was one of the year’s funniest movies, because in general, “unrated” cuts have been better than the “regular” release.

This “unrated” version skips a couple really great monents from the theatrical version, one instance is when Carell’s character “Brick” utters “I ate a big red candle” during the party hangover sequence and they replace it with a joke that’s nowhere near that great non-sequitor. Near the end of the film they edited out Ferrell’s lines just before he picks up the phone in the bar (something about “once being an anchorman”)which was more in line with the film’s plot/angle than the new scene of Burgundy eating cat poop. A TERRIBLY UNFUNNY ADDITION.

The crapper of it is, the unrated DVD has different and admittedly better extras than the theatrical DVD release, so to actually get the theatrical cut(which is a better cut than the unrated version) the customer gets screwed if they want the better extra features. lame.

in all actuality this review would be 4 for the movie, and 1 for the way this fiasco was put out on DVD.

Clarity Dect 6.0 Cordless Amplified Phone With Clarity Power and Call Waiting Caller ID (50603)

I have tried a lot of phones this year, including other phones by Clarity (older technologies) and one by GE. This is by far the best one that I have found. It is easy to use, light, is the latest technology, and is great for someone with mild to moderate hearing loss. Thus far, the phone has worked great and the price is reasonable. The sound quality is superb, very clear and the Dect 6.0 seems superior to older technologies.

I would definitely recommend this product.

Great Product, clumsy for elderly to hold5
I purchased this model for my elderly father who is confined to a chair and is legally blind. He, like many elderly folks, has hearing problems for which he refuses to obtain a hearing aid. This phone is a wonderful product for giving him clarity in his phone reception, just as its brand name implies. He also likes the large buttons, except for the ones near the top, which occasionally get pushed when he doesn’t intentionaly push them. The phone is clumsy to hold in the hand. Otherwise, it is the best phone he has ever owned, and he loves it. The price is well worth paying, and Amazon’s service and prompt shipping was better than any in-store experience, so convenient. I just used my credit card and had it shipped directly to his home. This would make an excellent Christmas gift for any elderly person you know.

Clarity bundled with boost2
The main problem with this phone is th clarity is bundled with the boost. I bought the phone for my great Aunt. She does not need the phone so loud (in loudness her hearing loss is only mild). Adding pressing the boost button (as ther is no way to leave it on) is an extra step for her which she forgets. She really needs the clarity feature and the phone on full volume would be loud enough. While the corded variety of this phone allows me to set the clarity apart from the boost (and leave it on at all times) the cordless variety lacks this feature. As a result, this phone ends up being useless, as I can either leave the volume to low for her to hear and hope she boosts the phone (which is a 50/50 chance) or put it on a loud volume and have it not be clear enough.

Other than that, my only complaint is this phone is not very intuitive to an elderly person who is used to corded phones, but I suspect this would be for any corded phone. The other issue is the top buttons are too easily press while the person is talking into the phone. All in all, while this cordless amplified phone got some of the best ratings of cordless amplified phones, I wish I had never bought it.

I first saw LA STRADA within a few years of its original release. I still remember how I felt when I saw Gelsomina’s face and heard her play her few melancholy notes on the violin. Almost fifty years later I can still see that face and hear those notes. I have to admit that I’d never heard of Federico Felini or his wife, Giulietta Masina. I didn’t know that, in time, LA STRADA would be labeled a work of genius. I did know, by the way that it affected me, that I had been exposed to something exceptional. I pictured myself as a pretty macho guy back then, and I wasn’t supposed to walk out of a movie theater with tears in my eyes. Luckily, no one saw me when I did.

For most of the movie, I wanted to take Gelsomina in my arms and protect her. I wanted to wrap a piece of Zampano’s chain around his neck and strangle him with it. I wanted to grab “The Fool” by the shoulders and shake him and tell him, “If you keep taunting that bully he’s going to make you pay for it.”

Poor Gelsomina, I couldn’t do a thing for her. “The Fool” was really a fool for not heeding my silent warnings and it cost him his life. As for Zampano, he would have been better off if I could have strangled him. His pain, a result of the pain he had caused, was worse than any punishment I could have dealt out.

My criteria as to what makes a movie great is a very personal one. It’s also a very simple one. I don’t look for multiple layers of symbolism or any other intellectual gobbledygook. It’s how I react emotionally. On that score, LA STRADA is right up there at the top of my list.

In a previous review, I was concerned about two sections on the “English” dubbed audio track, in which the sound completely dropped out. I just received an email from Jon Mulvaney (who represents Criterion). Here is an excerpt of that email: [The English language dubbed track on Criterion's LA STRADA is derived from a print of the American version of the film. Several minor cuts were made for the American release, and the disparities between the complete Italian cut of LA STRADA and its shorter American counterpart have resulted in a number of unavoidable audio dropouts on the English-dubbed track on the DVD. This is not a flaw in the DVD of La Strada but an accurate reflection of the Italian and American versions and an indication of the cuts that were made for the American release.] Many thanks to Mr. Mulvaney for looking further into the problem and getting right back to me. In short, we have the definitive version of La Strada (compliments of Criterion), and there is no need to return the DVD to Amazon or Criterion.
